Welcome to My World

Hi I'm
Aditi Purohit

Hello! Welcome to my portfolio . My name is Aditi Purohit, and I am a student at Plano West Senior High School.

My Story & Goals

I have always been interested in medicine, and hope to pursue it in college and medical school. However, even though I aspire to enter the medical field, my accomplishments and interests are diverse and unique; from being a part of a globally-renowned robotics team to founding a successful online platform advocating for body positivity, my experiences have taught me thousands of lessons and impacted me in ways nothing else could. I am excited to share these experiences with you, and I hope you’ll join me as I talk about them!

Bodyhood

Before quarantine started, I had a fairly good relationship with my body image. However, as the lockdown went on, sitting at home with nothing to do led me to gain a bit of weight. Hormonal changes started causing acne and made me feel awkward in my body. As I started to look different, the comments about me started changing. These comments made me feel vastly insecure about myself, and I realized that I was living in a bubble before quarantine due to the lack of body awareness. Also, as I grew up during quarantine, I started learning about laws and restrictions across the world that infringed on people’s choices with their bodies. From then onwards, I knew that I wanted to do something that would make an impact; no matter how small it is. After being inspired by digital platforms that strove to educate and spread awareness about varied topics, I decided to create Bodyhood.

Our Youth 4 the Climate

I am also part of one of the biggest international youth-led organizations, Our Youth For the Climate. Our Youth 4 the Climate seeks to educate youth about the environment and encourage them to practice sustainability. I am in the OY4CCommunities Team, which is in charge of opening, managing, and assisting OY4CCommunities all around the world. I am also the head of the Twitter Team, whose job is to post digestible and informational tweets about the climate.

FLL Projects

Our first project for FIRST LEGO League encompassed brainstorming, testing, and implementing a safe and effective way to clean birds that were victims of oil spills. The current cleaning method at that time was to use Dawn Dish Detergent to scrub the birds clean, which not only wasted an immense amount of water, but also was hazardous to the birds’ health. I and the rest of my team came up with using sodium polyacrylate, an absorbent usually found in diapers, to absorb the oil on the birds. After proper testing trials, we met with International Bird Rescue’s Response Services Manager and presented our idea, in order to possibly implement this solution at the world’s largest bird rescue. Community Service & Events

Project Stitch-Up Events

Project Stitch-Up is an organization based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that crochets clothing items for the underprivileged and homeless. I was the outreach coordinator the year it was founded, and we were able to donate over 60 items to a local shelter.

FIRST LEGO League

I’ve been a part of robotics for six years. I started in fourth grade when I joined a FIRST LEGO League team. Despite it being our first year in FLL, we qualified all the way to the Worlds Festival and won many awards pertaining to our project, robot design, and robot performance. In the second year of FLL, we qualified once again to the Worlds level, and won awards at that competition! In FLL, my main role was to work on our project. The first year, we undertook a project that would test and implement a safer and more efficient way to clean birds in oil spills (more under Climate Change *<–link to page 3* ). I was responsible for extending points of contact for implementation, writing informational and elaborative descriptions about our testing, and organizing methods of outreach and awareness.

FIRST Tech Challenge

After two years of FLL, we graduated to the next FIRST level; FIRST Tech Challenge. In FTC, I went to the States level two times (with two different teams). The first time I went to States was with the team I had been in FLL with. However, I later moved from Pennsylvania to Texas and had to join a completely new team; this one based in my middle school. I quickly realized that the team I had joined was unfair and unequal. The girls (including me) had to sit to the side and document while the boys built and tested the robot. So, the next season, I proposed the idea to make a new all-girls team in our middle school. I was in charge of the team member application process and later became captain of the team. Despite attending an online school, I and the rest of my team went to school after school hours every day to ensure our team’s success. We qualified all the way to the States competition (the highest level that year due to COVID) because of our very impressive and extensive outreach, which I was in charge of, along with some of my most hard-working teammates. I learned multitudes that year, and our team made a very significant impact on our local community with our success.
